    With her ex-boyfriend’s best friend… Tommy…

    B. I felt that the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song is kau. [eng kau > kau]

    C. I selected kau because this second person pronoun is often used informally. Kau was also selected because it is usually used to address a lover, which I found appropriate in this context.

In my opinion, the song is like a conversation between the singer and her (ex-) boyfriend, and kau would ensure that the conversation stays informal. Out of my curiosity, I did a quick search and found that kau is often used as the second person pronoun in the Malay Pop Scene. There are songs such as: Kau Ilhamku by NAKKEERAN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pflgTFDjVQ0) and Sesaat Kau Datang by Ramlah Rah (feat. SleeQ)

P.S. I found Kau Ilhamku to be quite useful because there are English translations to the lyrics ☺

    B:

What is the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song?

Kata ganti nama yang terbiak bagi ‘you’ dalam lagu ini ialah ‘you’.
(The best Malay pronoun would still be ‘you’).

    C. Mengapa anda pilih jawapan itu bagi soalan B. Why do you choose the particular answer for question B

The reason is because ‘you’ fits the song and it would sound weird when replaced with kau, anda, kamu or awak. Engkau though used in many malay love songs would not fit as well as using ‘you’ in this song. While anda is too formal and would not bring across the emotions she felt. in addition we do not know the guy’s age thus using kamu might be inappropriate as it may refer to a elder sister-younger guy relationship.

    B.
    Awak

    C.
I feel that ‘awak’ is more suitable because it is less formal compared to ‘anda’ and ‘kamu’. ‘Anda’ is used when conversing with people one is not close with and to the elders, whereas ‘kamu’ is used when conversing with siblings and people of lower rank, therefore they are not really suitable. Furthermore, this is a love song about her ex-boyfriend, therefore “awak” is a more suitable pronoun for ‘you’ in this song to show the close relationship they once had.

What is the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song?

I feel that the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song would be kau (from engkau).

Why do you choose the particular answer for question B

I think that “kau” would be the most suitable word to replace “you” in this song, as it is intended to be informal. Since the “you” in this song refers to the subject’s ex-boyfriend, and because it is a song which doesn’t sound too serious, I think that a word with an informal intonation would be more appropriate. “Kamu” would not be suitable as it refers to younger/ junior persons. Thus, “kau” would be the most suitable informal pronoun which can be used in this song compared to “awak” and “anda”. “Kau” is also a one-syllable word like the English pronoun “you”, thus it would able to fit into the song better as compared to “a-wak” or “an-da” which are two-syllable words.

    Terima Kasih!

What is the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song?

English Answer: The best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song is ‘engkau’.

Why do you choose the particular answer for question B?

English Answer: ‘Engkau’ is used to informally addressing another party. This is appropriate because the song is meant for the singer’s ex-boyfriend. Therefore, all forms of formalities must have been broken for them to be a couple in the first place. Furthermore, upon finding out that he has been lying to her, she will not bother to be polite to him and would use ‘engkau’ instead of ‘awak’ or ‘anda’ or ‘kamu’.

    B.
    engkau

    C.
engkau is usually used when there is informality. In this story, the ex-boyfriend cheated on the girl and so the girl is angry and heart broken. Therefore, enkau is the best word to used rather than anda and awak.

    B) the best pronoun would be engkau. It is an informal term, which is more suitable since she is singing about her ex-boyfriend and probably wouldn’t be concerned with showing him respect, given the circumstances. The shortened form “kau” would be even better to fit into the song rhythm.

    B. I would think that engkau is the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song.

    C. It is because the relationship is a rather close and informal one. The song is also about the unhappiness of the singer towards her boyfriend, and hence she would have used engkau in Malay.

What is the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song?

Why do you choose the particular answer for question B

‘Engkau’ is the informal way of saying ‘you’. Since the girl already know her boyfriend very well, they should use the informal form of saying ‘you’. Furthermore, a song won’t be close to the listeners’ heart if it uses all the formal words. ‘Anda’ will be too formal for this case.

    English Answer:
The best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this is ‘Engkau’.

Why do you choose the particular answer for question B

    English Answer:
I chose ‘Engkau’ as it is an informal way for saying ‘you’. Alternatives include ‘Awak’ which is seldom used, ‘Kamu’ which is used on someone junior and ‘Anda’ which is neutral. Since it is a love song with a tragic twist, it ‘Engkau’ is the best alternative.

What is the best Malay pronoun for ‘you’ in this song?

    “Engkau”.

Why do you choose the particular answer for question B

I chose “engkau” because it is a breakup song which marks the end of their relationship. In addition, I felt that “engkau” might be more apt for this scenario since couples ideally address one another in an informal way to express their rights over the person and intimacy. I also thought that “engkau” is more appropriate since the girl does not trust him enough for her to address him in a respectful manner.

Terima kasih Cikgu Sew, jumpa lagi.

I would choose to use “engkau” or its shortened form “kau”.

“Engkau” or “kau” conveys a sense of informality and closeness. Moreover, the singer is singing to her cheating boyfriend, who is not worthy of words which connote respect like “anda” or “awak”.

    ‘kau’ from engkau.

Given that the singer’s boyfriend lied and did wrong to her, the singer is the innocent being and is now at a higher position. Hence, the informal engkau/kau can be used instead of the usual anda/awak.
